Känguru is the third album by Guru Guru, released in 1972 on the Brain label. It was produced by Conny Plank and features the bands classic lineup: Ax Genrich on guitar, Uli Trepte on bass, and Mani Neumeier handling drums and vocals.
Musically, Känguru builds on the same core elements found in their earlier albums, Ufo (1970) and Hinten (1971), which were released under Rolf Kaiser's Ohr label. Like its predecessors, the album is quintessential Krautrock, made up of just four extended tracks, each lasting between 10 and 15 minutes.
However, with Känguru, the band begins to shift away from the unrestrained chaos of their earlier work. The compositions show more structure and cohesion, with a lighter, more melodic feel that makes the music more approachable. Humor also becomes a more prominent feature, as evidenced by Mani Neumeiers quirky spoken intro to the track "Immer lustig."
In short, Känguru marks a maturing of Guru Gurus soundwhile retaining their experimental spirit, it delivers a more polished and engaging listening experience, making it a standout Krautrock classic.
